Notes on Muscovite Affairs (Rerum Moscoviticarum Commentarii) () was a Latin book by Baron Sigismund von Herberstein on the geography, history and customs of Muscovy (the 16th century Russian state). The book was the main early source of knowledge about Russia in Western Europe. 1 The Army of Muscovite Russia 2 The Reformed Army of Ivan IV 3 The New Formation Army of the Romanovs 4 The North Caucasians in the Muscovite Army 5 The Muscovite Penetration into Siberia 6 Conclusion: The Muscovite Army on the Eve of Tsar Peter's Reforms Colour Plate Commentaries Bibliography

In this major work, Perdue challenges historians' focus on China's struggles with European powers and argues that the more important historical event was the Manchu Qing empire's fight with the Zunghar Mongolian state and the Muscovite Russian empire for domination of Central Asia. He traces the rise of the Qing and how they -- with military conquest and repression, but also through trade.   Asia was the principle focus of empire-builders from Alexander and Akbar to Chinggis Khan and Qianlong and yet, until now, there has been no attempt to provide a comprehensive history of empire in the region. Empire in Asia addresses the need for a thorough survey of the volume traces the evolution of a constellation of competing empires in Asia from the 13th through to the 18th.

It should be noted that there is a certain overlap between the two collections, and that eight bilingual items in Mongolian and Manchu (or trilingual with Chinese) are classified with the Manchu books (HW nos. 7, 24, 26, 29, 31, and extra nos. 38, 39, 40).   The Bibliothèque Nationale de France holds a copy of a Manchu work(1) in which are found several short texts which seem to have been written by a Christian learning Manchu (a missionary?). Some of them are explicitly Christian in content (the Lord's prayer for instance), others are more mundane and some even seem to have.
